Brazil releases global roadmap for fossil fuel phase-out

Brazil, the host of the COP30 summit, has published the first global roadmap designed to assist countries in transitioning away from coal, oil, and gas. The document describes the shift as “urgent, inevitable and yet possible,” suggesting that nations can boost economies and reduce poverty while breaking their dependence on fossil fuels.

The roadmap proposes a collective agenda in three phases between 2028 and 2033, encouraging countries to tailor transition measures to their specific energy consumption, production, and economic frameworks. The initiative aims to move UN climate conferences from negotiating agreements to implementing existing targets.

In addition to the energy transition, Brazil released a roadmap for forest protection, aiming to halt deforestation and forest degradation by 2030 through conservation, sustainable management, and restoration. This follows the COP30 summit in Belém, where a final agreement failed to explicitly mention fossil fuels due to opposition from major oil producers like Saudi Arabia and Russia.
