Brazil government projects 2027 minimum wage at R$1,717
The Brazilian federal government has included a projection for the 2027 national minimum wage of R$1,717 in the Project of Law of Budget Guidelines (PLDO) submitted to Congress. The figure represents a nominal rise of R$96, or about 5.92%, over the 2026 minimum wage of R$1,621. The estimate assumes inflation replacement measured by the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) and a real gain of 2.5%, the maximum allowed under the current fiscal framework.
If the proposal is approved, the new floor would become effective on 1 January 2027, with workers receiving the higher amount from the February payroll. The adjustment would also raise the base for several social benefits, including INSS pensions, the Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC), the PIS/Pasep salary bonus, unemployment insurance and other linked payments.
The Department of Inter‑Union Statistics and Socio‑Economic Studies (Dieese) warns that the projected wage remains far below the amount it calculates as necessary for a family of four to cover basic living costs in 2027—more than R$8,110, roughly five times the proposed minimum. The disparity underscores ongoing debate over the purchasing power of the minimum wage and its adequacy for Brazilian households.
