Brazil proposes remote planning time for public school teachers
A new legislative proposal in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, Project of Law 3225/26, seeks to establish official “Home Teacher Planning” (Planejamento Domiciliar Docente) for basic education professionals. The bill aims to allow teachers with a 40-hour weekly workload to perform at least four hours of their extraclass activities remotely from home. For those with shorter contracts, the remote planning period would be applied proportionally.
The proposal seeks to amend the Teacher Salary Floor Law (Lei do Piso do Magistério). Under current legislation, two-thirds of a teacher's workload must be dedicated to classroom interaction, while the remaining third is reserved for extraclass duties such as grading, pedagogical records, and student progress monitoring.
Authors of the bill, Deputies Idilvan Alencar and Professora Luciene Cavalcante, argue that the measure will improve teaching quality by providing adequate time for organization and evaluation without physical overload. They emphasize that the initiative does not reduce total working hours or decrease direct interaction time with students.
