Brazil public sector records R$ 10 billion primary deficit in August

Brazil's consolidated public sector recorded a primary deficit of R$ 10 billion in August, according to data from the Banco Central. This result represents an improvement compared to the same month in 2025, when the deficit was R$ 17.3 billion. The central government accounted for a R$ 14.7 billion deficit, while regional governments recorded a surplus of R$ 2.7 billion and state-owned enterprises reported a surplus of approximately R$ 2 billion.

Nominal interest expenses reached R$ 105.9 billion in August, driven largely by losses in currency swap operations. Consequently, the public sector's nominal deficit reached R$ 115.9 billion. The gross government debt rose to 82.9% of GDP, totaling R$ 11.1 trillion, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from the previous month.

In the external sector, Brazil's current account deficit totaled US$ 5.1 billion in August. This increase was attributed to higher net spending on services and profit/dividend remittances, despite a trade surplus of US$ 6.6 billion. Direct foreign investment in the country saw a net inflow of US$ 7.4 billion during the month.
