Brazil publishes National Energy Plan 2055 targeting renewable growth
Brazil has published its National Energy Plan (PNE) 2055, a long-term strategic document developed by the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Energy Research Company (EPE). The plan projects a doubling of energy supply by 2055, with renewable sources potentially accounting for over 80% of the national energy matrix across sectors such as industry, transport, and agriculture. Electricity generation could be up to 99% clean within approximately 30 years, driven by the expansion of solar and wind power.
To support this transition, electrical transmission infrastructure is expected to triple in capacity and extension. Additionally, biofuel production is projected to increase fivefold, while natural gas is expected to remain a key component for system security and flexibility. Efficiency gains are estimated to prevent more than 25% of final energy consumption by 2055.
Parallel to these long-term renewable goals, the Brazilian government is focusing on hydrocarbon exploration in the Equatorial Margin. Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira highlighted the potential for oil exploration in the Barreirinhas and Pará-Maranhão basins. This follows Petrobras' identification of hydrocarbons in the Morpho well off the coast of Amapá, which could impact regional investment, infrastructure, and energy sovereignty.
