Brazil pushes gas‑powered trucks and biodiesel for maritime decarbonisation

Gas‑powered trucks are gaining a foothold in Brazil’s road freight sector, with more than 2,500 vehicles using compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas or biomethane – about 0.1% of the 2.24 million heavy‑truck fleet. Industry groups cite expanding refuelling infrastructure, such as the Corredores Sustentáveis network in Paraná and projects aiming to operate 2,000 gas trucks within two years, backed by investments of roughly R$ 8 billion.

At the same time, the Energy Summit in Rio de Janeiro highlighted biodiesel and other renewable marine fuels as key to cutting emissions from global shipping. Binatural’s CEO André Lavor and other experts discussed the sector’s need for low‑carbon fuels, noting Brazil’s large biodiesel capacity (600 million L yr⁻¹) and its potential to help meet the International Maritime Organization’s target of net‑zero emissions by 2050.
