Brazil advances biometane, biofuels, and low-carbon transit

Overview

By August 2026, Brazil’s transition toward low-carbon transport and biofuels continued to accelerate. In the biofuel sector, Be8 introduced BeVant, a biofuel designed to replace 100% of fossil diesel in existing engines and infrastructure without modifications. The product reportedly offers a potential 99% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions on a “tank-to-wheel” basis and is already serving over 100 clients.

Concurrently, the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy is testing higher biodiesel blends. While the mandatory blend is currently B15, testing for a 20% blend (B20) is expected to conclude by February 2027, with potential validation for up to 25% blends. The National Council for Energy Policy will determine future mandatory increases following these results.

In urban mobility, Scania’s partnership with Caio to develop the K 280 4x2 Millennium bus—a low-floor vehicle powered by natural gas or biomethane—progressed through the homologation process with SPTrans. Scania also unveiled a prototype of this bus, featuring a 9-litre biometane-fuelled engine and carbon-fiber gas cylinders. In the logistics sector, Scania and Reiter Log announced a record acquisition of 220 trucks powered by natural gas or biomethane, with deliveries expected by December. Reiter Log has also begun operating Brazil’s first Scania electric mechanical horse.

Furthering electrification, infrastructure company Motiva is investing approximately R$ 50 million to expand its electric and hybrid fleet to 125 units by the end of 2026. These developments follow earlier milestones in July 2026, including Volvo Truck Brazil’s delivery of flex-fuel trucks and the Senate’s approval of the National Methane Zero Program.
