Brazil raises gasoline ethanol blend to 32% starting August 2026

The National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) approved a temporary increase in the ethanol content of regular gasoline from 30% to 32% of anhydrous ethanol, effective 1 August 2026 for an initial 180‑day period. The change applies nationwide and follows a gradual rise in Brazil’s fuel blends that began in the early 1990s (E22, E27, etc.).

Modern flex‑fuel vehicles can automatically adjust to the higher blend without any mechanical changes, while owners of older, non‑flex or imported cars are advised to consult their manuals before refueling. Technical studies, both domestic and international, have shown that higher ethanol blends do not cause engine wear when used in compatible vehicles, supporting the policy shift.

The adjustment is part of Brazil’s long‑term strategy to increase renewable content in fuels and reduce reliance on pure gasoline.
