Brazil raises gasoline ethanol blend to 32% nationwide
The National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) approved an increase of the ethanol content in gasoline to 32%, which took effect on Saturday, 1 May. The change applies to all fuel stations across Brazil and has prompted a discussion among lawmakers, industry groups and consumers.
Defence Minister José Múcio said he will meet with TCU minister Bruno Dantas to examine the legality of the 30 → 32 percent increase, after deputies questioned the lack of technical studies supporting the move. UNICA, the sugar‑cane and bio‑energy industry association, highlighted that the higher blend gives ethanol a price advantage over gasoline for the first time since 2018, with hydrated ethanol averaging R$ 3.70 / L versus gasoline at R$ 6.39 / L in São Paulo, saving consumers about R$ 1.32 per litre.
The new blend is expected to reduce Brazil’s reliance on imported oil, boost the domestic bio‑fuel sector and improve fuel‑price competitiveness in states with strong sugar‑cane production. Gas stations in Rio Grande do Sul have a 30‑day adaptation period. The policy has generated debate over possible effects on older vehicle engines and overall fuel prices.
