Brazil ranks as fourth largest global egg producer

Brazil has solidified its position as the world's fourth-largest egg producer and sixth-largest consumer. According to data from Instituto Ovos Brasil, domestic consumption reached 310 eggs per inhabitant annually in 2026, a significant increase from the 120 eggs per person recorded in 2010.

The market is seeing increased diversification in production systems, including conventional, cage-free, free-range (caipira), and organic methods. While shell color—white versus brown—is determined by the chicken's lineage and does not affect nutritional value, other variations exist, such as eggs enriched with omega-3, vitamin E, and selenium through adjusted poultry diets.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) monitors these developments, ensuring that commercial terms like “happy eggs” do not replace technical legal denominations and that labeling accurately reflects production conditions. Additionally, the industry is expanding its international footprint; the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) reported that egg exports reached 40,894 tons in 2025, representing a 121% increase over the previous year.
