Brazil reaches historic low in illiteracy rate
Brazil has reached its lowest historical illiteracy rate of 4.9% among the population aged 15 and older, according to the latest Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad-C) data.
Various states reported declines in illiteracy rates between 2024 and 2025. In Acre, the rate fell from 9.4% to 8.9%, while in Bahia, it decreased from 9.9% to 9.5%. Roraima also saw a reduction, moving from 3.8% to 3.4%.
The Ministry of Education (MEC) is driving these improvements through the National Pact for Overcoming Illiteracy and Qualifying Youth and Adult Education (Pacto EJA). Key initiatives include the CadEJA platform, a virtual system designed to help individuals reconnect with basic education by facilitating enrollment and providing guidance on available opportunities.
