Brazil Secures Strategic Antigen Bank for Foot‑and‑Mouth Disease

Brazil received a national bank of foot‑and‑mouth disease (FMD) antigens from Argentine biotech firm Biogénesis Bagó during a ceremony in Garín, Buenos Aires Province. The delivery was attended by Brazil's Agriculture Minister André de Paula, officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), the Paraná Institute of Technology (Tecpar) and Argentine authorities.

The bank holds 10 million doses of antigens covering the two most common FMD serotypes in Brazil and can supply up to 10 million vaccine doses immediately if an outbreak occurs. Tecpar President Eduardo Marafon said the system can produce a usable vaccine within 72 hours of a detection. The facility stores live antigens under controlled conditions for up to ten years, enabling rapid response and supporting Brazil’s “free of FMD without vaccination” status achieved in 2025.

Biogénesis Bagó CEO Esteban Turic emphasized the partnership as a model of modern sanitary security, noting that “the best sanitary defense on the planet” is now in place. The bank is expected to strengthen Brazil’s meat exports to markets such as Japan, the United States and the European Union.
