Brazil records over 40 rural land invasions in first half of 2026

A monitoring report from the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) documented 41 incidents of illegal occupation of rural properties up to June 2026. Thirty‑eight of the cases were carried out by social movements, primarily the Landless Workers' Movement (MST), while three involved indigenous groups. Pernambuco registered the highest number of invasions with 12 occurrences.

Lawmakers cited the surge as evidence for tighter property protection. Deputy Pedro Lupion (Republicanos‑PR) emphasized the need for “legal certainty for our producers.” A legislative proposal, PL 3.768/2021, aims to improve the selection process for agrarian reform beneficiaries and adjust deadlines for regularising occupied lands. The bill also calls for municipal consultation and financial planning for post‑settlement infrastructure. Deputy Zé Vitor (PL‑MG) supports the measure, arguing that municipal involvement can make beneficiary selection fairer. The proposal is currently under review by the Chamber’s Constitution and Citizenship Committee.
