Brazil registers Pix as high‑renown trademark

The Brazilian federal government filed the Pix instant‑payment system with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) to obtain a high‑renown trademark, a status that grants the strongest legal protection across all economic sectors. The move was announced by Development Minister Márcio Elias Rosa during a meeting of the Conselho de Desenvolvimento Econômico Social Sustentável, citing the need to shield the brand from alleged United States pressures.

A Real Time Big Data poll conducted June 10‑11, 2026 found that 96% of Brazilian respondents approve of Pix, with 78% having used the service. Respondents credited the Central Bank (39%) as the main driver of its success, followed by former President Jair Bolsonaro (23%) and current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (16%). The survey showed strong resistance to U.S. competition and concerns about possible U.S. actions against the system, while a majority supported President Lula’s defensive stance toward Pix.
