Petrobras raises diesel prices by R$ 1.00, neutralized by government subsidy
Petrobras has announced a R$ 1.00 per liter increase in the nominal price of diesel A for distributors. However, this hike will be neutralized by a new R$ 1.00 per liter economic subsidy regulated by the Brazilian Ministry of Finance. This measure, effective immediately for an initial 30-day period, aims to mitigate the impact of rising international oil prices and maintain stable domestic costs.
As a result of this offsetting mechanism, the effective sale price of diesel to distributors remains unchanged. Analysts from Itaú BBA note that while the price hike is nominal, the subsidy helps reduce the gap between domestic diesel prices and import parity from approximately 36% to 22%.
In other regions, such as Bahia, local refineries like Acelen have implemented independent price increases for diesel and gasoline, leading to concerns from local fuel retailers regarding regional competitiveness. Meanwhile, the biodiesel sector is advocating for an increase in the mandatory biodiesel blend to B17 to reduce national dependence on imported fossil diesel.
