Brazil renewable energy plants seek compensation for generation cuts

The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) announced that 1,539 wind and solar photovoltaic plants have filed requests for compensation regarding generation cuts, known as curtailment. These requests represent approximately 53 GW of installed capacity, which accounts for about 91% of the total 56 GW considered eligible for the period between September 1, 2023, and November 25, 2025.

This process is part of a government initiative to negotiate reimbursements in exchange for companies dropping legal actions regarding these cuts. According to estimates from the Brazilian Wind and New Technologies Association (Abeeólica), the total reimbursement could reach R$ 3.3 billion, though the final amount depends on how many companies ultimately sign the commitment terms.

The expression of interest is the initial stage of the process. The registered information will be forwarded to the Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber (CCEE) and the National Electric System Operator (ONS). Filing an interest does not automatically guarantee the right to compensation or define the final value, as subsequent steps must be completed according to regulatory ordinances.
