Brazil renewable energy curtailment and compensation

Overview

Brazil’s national grid operator, ONS, implemented an emergency curtailment plan to manage an unprecedented surplus of renewable energy. This measure, described as an “exceptional” step to maintain system frequency, targeted wind and solar generation to prevent imbalances caused by high renewable output and lower demand.

Following these generation cuts, the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy announced that 1,539 wind and solar photovoltaic plants have filed for compensation. These requests cover approximately 53 GW of installed capacity. The government is initiating a process to negotiate reimbursements, potentially totaling R$ 3.3 billion, in exchange for companies withdrawing legal actions related to the curtailment.
