Brazil sees 11% rise in asylum requests in 2025

UNHCR data show that asylum applications in Brazil increased by 11% in 2025. The agency notes that the Americas host 22.8 million refugees, with Venezuelans historically the largest group. A new study by OBMigra and the Ministry of Justice reveals that Cuban nationals now lead the 2025 requests, accounting for 55.4% (75,599 filings) – an 88 % jump from 2024 – while Venezuelan applications fell to 21,233.

World Refugee Day on 20 June was marked in Rio de Janeiro with the Rio Refugia fair, organized by Abraço Cultural, PARES Cáritas RJ and Sesc RJ. The event, featuring food, fashion and cultural workshops by refugees from nine countries, aims to promote autonomy and inclusion. UNHCR representative Davide Torzilli warned that “the international community is collectively failing these millions” and called for “facilitating formal employment, recognizing qualifications and strengthening inclusive policies”. The campaign’s slogan this year is “Até Cada Pessoa Estar a Salvo”.

Globally, more than 117 million people remain forcibly displaced, though the figure has fallen for the first time in over a decade. UNHCR officials urged governments worldwide to expand long‑term solutions for refugees.
