Brazil reports 35 measles cases amid regional outbreaks

Brazil has recorded 35 confirmed cases of measles so far this year, with the majority occurring in the state of São Paulo. In São Paulo, 32 cases have been identified, including 29 in the capital city. Health officials noted that among these, one case involved a 6-month-old with an incomplete vaccination schedule, while another involved a 28-year-old who had already been vaccinated.

In the state of Amazonas, three imported cases were confirmed in Tabatinga, located in the triple border region between Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. These cases originated from Alto Monte, Peru. In response, the Manaus Municipal Health Secretariat (Semsa) issued an epidemiological alert to intensify surveillance, detection, and immediate notification of suspected cases. This measure aims to prevent local circulation, as Manaus has not seen an autochthonous case since 2018.

The Ministry of Health plans to deploy support teams to Tabatinga and Carauari on September 21 to investigate cases, collect samples, and implement vaccine blocking. This surge follows broader outbreaks across the Americas, where the Pan American Health Organization reports nearly 48,000 confirmed cases and 44 deaths, with high concentrations in Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, and Peru.
