Brazil reports electoral harassment and illegal propaganda in 2026 elections

Authorities in Brazil are reporting various irregularities following the first round of the 2026 general elections. In Rio Grande do Sul, the Labor Public Prosecutor's Office (MPT-RS) recorded 37 complaints of electoral harassment, a significant increase from the six complaints filed during the same period in 2022. Prosecutors suggest this rise reflects increased public awareness and trust in reporting institutions.

In Sergipe, the Electoral Public Prosecutor's Office has filed 38 legal representations regarding irregular campaign propaganda. These actions target the deliberate dumping of campaign flyers and leaflets, known as ‘voo da madrugada’, near polling stations. The prosecutor's office is seeking maximum fines and holding political federations and parties jointly responsible for the illegal distribution of materials.
