Cruzeiro bus accident kills six pilgrims in São Paulo
A fatal bus accident occurred on the Doutor Avelino Júnior Highway (SP-052) in Cruzeiro, São Paulo, early Sunday morning. The vehicle, which was transporting approximately 48 religious pilgrims from Minas Gerais to the Sanctuary of Aparecida, lost control and fell into a 15-meter ravine.
Authorities confirmed six fatalities, including an adolescent and several adults. Approximately 40 other passengers were injured, with many being treated at hospitals in Cruzeiro, Lorena, and Guaratinguetá.
The bus driver was arrested for involuntary manslaughter. Investigations revealed the vehicle was operating clandestinely with an expired authorization from the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT). Additionally, police noted the bus had an expired chronotachograph and tires in inadequate condition. The driver tested negative for alcohol consumption.
