Fatal traffic accidents and highway collisions in Brazil
Overview
The period of late August through late October 2026 saw a continued surge in fatal and injurious traffic accidents across Brazil. Following earlier mass-casualty events in September and mid-October, new fatalities were reported in late October across several regions.
In early October, a major multi-vehicle collision on the BR-393 highway in Barra do Piraí, Rio de Janeiro, killed five members of a single family from Juiz de Fora and injured nine others. The crash involved a truck carrying floor tiles and four passenger vehicles.
During the weekend of October 23-26, 2026, a series of severe accidents resulted in further fatalities. In Paraná, a collision on the BR-373 in Candói killed a father, mother, and three children, including two infants, after their vehicle was struck by a Ford Ranger; the 18-year-old driver, who was reportedly intoxicated and driving without a license, was arrested. In Santa Catarina, a collision on the BR-470 in Lontras killed four, including a seven-year-old girl, while a head-on collision between two cars on the BR-116 in Mafra killed two people. In Mato Grosso do Sul, a head-on crash on the MS-164 between a car and a pickup truck killed a young couple from Umuarama and injured three others, including an infant.
Other incidents included a fatal collision between a van and a car in Maranhão that killed three people, and a motorcycle accident in Rio Bom. In Florianópolis, a police vehicle struck a motorcyclist during post-election celebrations, an incident currently under investigation. Additional fatalities occurred in Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, and through a rollover on the BR-262 in Campo Grande.
