Brazil’s violent deaths fall; police killings hit record high in 2025

The 2025 Anuário Brasileiro de Segurança Pública shows a historic decline in overall violent deaths, dropping 8.2% to 40,775 victims – the lowest total since the series began in 2012 and bringing the homicide rate to 19.1 per 100,000 inhabitants. While homicides fell, deaths caused by police interventions rose sharply, reaching 6,602 fatalities – an average of 18 per day and the highest figure ever recorded. Police‑related deaths accounted for 99.3% men and 82% Black victims.

Feminicide numbers hit a new record of 1,571 deaths, up 4% from the previous year, contrasting with the broader downward trend. The report also notes a prison population surge to 964,668 inmates, the largest on record, and a concentration of the ten most violent municipalities in the Northeast, with five cities in Bahia and three in Ceará. State‑level data reveal the Amapá as the most violent state, while Santa Catarina registers the lowest violence rate. These patterns underscore persistent regional disparities and the growing impact of police lethality amid overall crime reductions.
