Brazil: Surge in electoral harassment reports in workplaces
Brazil is experiencing a significant rise in reports of electoral harassment within the workplace during the 2026 election cycle. The Public Labor Ministry (MPT) has noted a sharp increase in complaints, with 705 reports filed nationwide during the elections. In the state of São Paulo, the Campinas region has emerged as a leader in reports, accounting for approximately 30.9% of the 123 complaints in the 15th Region.
Specific cases of coercion and political discrimination have drawn legal scrutiny. In Cuiabá, the MPT is investigating allegations of political persecution following the dismissal of a health worker who participated in a pro-Lula demonstration. Similarly, in Itabaiana, Sergipe, an investigation was opened against a jewelry store owner for allegedly threatening to reduce employee salaries if a new 40-hour workweek scale were implemented.
To combat these abuses, labor unions and human rights organizations, including Fenatrad and Themis, have launched the ‘Não passaremos pano’ campaign. This initiative specifically targets the vulnerability of domestic workers, who often face political pressure in isolated residential environments. Additionally, the MPT and Regional Labor Courts (TRT) have established special duty shifts to receive urgent reports of threats, such as dismissal or wage reduction, intended to influence voting choices.
