Brazil reports rising dengue cases and mosquito control efforts
Brazil is facing significant increases in arbovirus cases, specifically dengue, chikungunya, and zika. In Goiânia, health authorities have conducted over 1.7 million home visits in 2026, resulting in the elimination of more than 953,000 Aedes aegypti mosquito breeding sites. The city has recorded 33,065 confirmed dengue cases and 750 chikungunya cases so far this year, marking a 21% and 351% increase respectively compared to the same period in 2025.
In the state of Paraíba, data from the Ministry of Health indicates 7,296 probable dengue cases and 14 deaths in 2026. This represents a 55.6% increase in mortality compared to the nine deaths recorded in 2025. Health officials report that serotypes 1, 2, and 3 are circulating in the region, with serotype 3 being the most prevalent.
Both regions are employing various containment strategies, including the use of mosquito traps, insecticide spraying, and intensive home inspections to identify and destroy breeding sites in residential areas and recycling centers.
