Brazil reports significant reduction in burned areas
Recent environmental data indicates a significant reduction in burned areas across Brazil. According to a MapBiomas report, the total area burned in 2025 was 12.7 million hectares, representing a 31% decrease compared to the historical average. This decline is attributed to factors such as prevention campaigns, increased inspection operations, and changes in seasonal climatic conditions.
In the state of Goiás, the reduction is also notable. Data from the Laboratory of Environmental Satellite Applications (Lasa/UFRJ) shows that the area burned by forest fires in Goiás decreased by approximately 27% in 2026 compared to 2025. During the first eight months of 2026, the State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development (Semad) recorded 191.1 thousand hectares of vegetation consumed by fire, down from 261.8 thousand hectares in the same period the previous year.
Andréa Vulcanis, secretary of Semad, stated that these results stem from coordinated efforts between Semad and the Military Fire Brigade to protect the Cerrado. Key strategies include satellite monitoring, the implementation of preventive firebreaks, integrated fire management, and enhanced first-response teams.
