Brazil requires toxicology test for first‑time driver licences in categories A and B

The state traffic agency Detran RJ will require all candidates for a first‑time driver licence in categories A (motorcycles) and B (cars) to present a negative toxicology exam. The rule, mandated by Law 15.153/2025, takes effect on 29 June. Applicants must complete the test after opening their Renach record and before the physical, mental and psychological assessments, with results recorded in the system within 90 days. The exam must be performed at a laboratory accredited by the National Traffic Secretariat, the same facilities used for higher‑class licences.

Detran Rondônia has implemented the same requirement, integrating the toxicology result into its licensing system before issuing the Permissão para Dirigir. Officials said the measure aims to promote safer, more responsible driving and to comply with the new federal law.
