Brazil rescues 479 people from slave-like conditions in August
During the Operação Resgate VI, conducted throughout August, Brazilian authorities rescued 479 people from slave-like conditions across 231 inspections. The operation was a multidisciplinary effort involving the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), the Labor Public Ministry (MPT), the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), the Federal Public Defender's Office (DPU), and the Federal Police.
The victims included 75 women, 13 children or adolescents, and 66 foreign nationals from countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Venezuela, Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Guinea-Bissau. Minas Gerais recorded the highest number of rescues, with 208 individuals liberated.
Exploitation was identified in both rural and urban settings. In rural areas, 292 people were rescued, primarily in coffee, onion, and potato farming. In urban areas, 178 people were rescued, with the construction sector accounting for 85 cases. Identified abuses included exhaustive workdays, lack of formal contracts, inadequate housing, absence of potable water, and lack of personal protective equipment.
As a result of the inspections, employers were notified to regularize labor ties and pay severance and labor liabilities, which are estimated to exceed R$ 1.4 million. Since 1995, Brazil has rescued a total of 70,271 people from such conditions.
