Overview

Coordinated inspections by Brazil’s Ministry of Labor and partner agencies have uncovered forced-labour conditions across farms, construction sites, mines, markets, and domestic households. Recent operations have expanded the scope of rescues, including 35 sugarcane workers in São Paulo, 69 people from construction and mining sites in Bahia, and 35 workers from a cotton farm in Mato Grosso. They reportedly faced 15-hour workdays and living conditions marked by pest infestations and a lack of hot water.

Administrative actions have progressed through the ‘Lista Suja’ (Dirty List) registry. An October 2026 update added 82 new employers—54 individuals and 28 legal entities—based on inspections affecting 553 workers across 21 states. While this represents a 51.48% reduction in new inclusions compared to the April 2026 update, significant violations persist. In Mato Grosso, specifically in Nova Maringá, Sorriso, and Alto Taquari, 42 workers, including adolescents, were rescued from conditions involving sleeping in canvas tents, containers, or adapted buses, alongside a lack of potable water and sanitation. Minas Gerais recorded 19 cases, and Rondônia appeared on the registry for the first time following a public works investigation. High-incidence sectors include cattle ranching, domestic services, charcoal production, coffee, and construction.
