Brazil forced‑labour crackdown continues

Entities: Goiás · Ministry of Labour and Employment (MTE) – Brazil · Bahia · Minas Gerais · Cezarina

Overview

Coordinated inspections by Brazil’s Ministry of Labor, the Public Ministry of Labor and partner agencies have uncovered forced‑labour conditions across farms, construction sites, mines, markets and domestic households. Early raids rescued dozens of workers—including sugarcane labourers in São Paulo and Bahia, children in Sergipe, an elderly couple in Paraná, cotton‑farm workers in Mato Grande and recycling‑plant employees in Rondonópolis. A joint operation on 30 June freed six Guarani men from a vegetable farm near Porto Alegre and investigated a quarry in Virmond, Paraná after a tip about debt‑bondage. In June 2026 a 62‑year‑old woman from Eusébio, Ceará, was rescued after 55 years of unpaid domestic service. On 13 July 2026 inspectors freed 29 workers from stone quarries in Sento Sé and Casa Nova (Bahia) and Santa Cruz (Pernambuco). A related action earlier rescued nine additional workers in Pernambuco, bringing the total rescued in the operation to 38. A further case expanded the crackdown: on 14 May 2026 a 65‑year‑old man was rescued from a remote farm inside the Terra do Meio Ecological Station in Altamira, Pará, after nearly seven years in conditions described as analogous to modern slavery. In mid‑July authorities rescued a 69‑year‑old domestic worker in Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, who had endured 52 years of unpaid labour. Late‑July operations widened the scope. In Cezarina, Goiás, 55 migrants recruited from Bahia and Minas Gerais were freed after weeks of forced corn‑straw harvesting under unsanitary conditions and withheld wages; authorities provided bus tickets home and opened administrative proceedings that could place the employer on the national “dirty list.” The same round of inspections freed two miners in Presidente Olegário, Minas Gerais and nine construction workers in Maranguape, Ceará, who received severance and unpaid‑wage compensation.
