Brazil rescues illegal captive monkey and capybara in Rio and Rio Grande do Sul

Environmental inspectors from the Chico Mendes Institute (ICMBio) rescued a chained female capuchin monkey from a home in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro, after a tip was received via the FalaBR platform. The animal, native to the Tijuca National Park, was taken to the Instituto Vida Livre for veterinary and behavioral evaluation. The property's occupants were referred to the local police for possible administrative fines of up to R$ 5,000.

In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the Military Brigade seized a capybara kept illegally on a rural property in Senador Salgado Filho following an Ibama alert. Police also discovered an improvised firearm during the raid. The capybara will undergo a health assessment before being placed under appropriate environmental authority care, and the owners were handed over to the civil police for legal proceedings.
