Brazil researchers seek 8,500 volunteers for stroke prevention polypill trial
Researchers in Brazil are recruiting 8,500 volunteers for clinical trials of the country’s first national polypill designed to prevent strokes and other cardiovascular diseases. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a single pill that combines rosuvastatin (10 mg) for cholesterol control with two blood pressure medications: valsartan (80 mg) and amlodipine (5 mg).
Led by neurologist Sheila Martins at Hospital Moinhos de Vento in Porto Alegre, the research is conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Health through the Proadi-SUS program. The study follows a successful initial phase involving 370 participants conducted between 2020 and 2023.
Eligible participants must be between 50 and 75 years old, have no history of stroke or heart attack, and not currently use medications for cholesterol, hypertension, or diabetes. The trial will involve 14 stroke centers across several Brazilian states, including São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, and Bahia. Participants will be monitored over a period of three to four years to determine if the treatment reduces the risk of stroke, dementia, and heart failure.
