Brazil stroke prevention polypill clinical trials

Overview

Researchers in Brazil are recruiting 8,500 volunteers for clinical trials of the nation’s first domestic polypill, intended to prevent strokes and other cardiovascular diseases. The medication combines rosuvastatin (10 mg) for cholesterol control with two blood pressure medications: valsartan (80 mg) and amlodipine (5 mg).

Led by neurologist Sheila Martins at Hospital Moinhos de Vento in Porto Alegre, the study is conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Health through the Proadi-SUS program. This large-scale trial follows a successful initial phase involving 370 participants conducted between 2020 and 2023.

Eligible participants must be between 50 and 75 years old with no history of stroke or heart attack. The research aims to monitor participants over three to four years to determine if the treatment reduces the risk of stroke, dementia, and heart failure, ultimately providing evidence to guide public health prevention policies for low and medium-risk populations.
