Brazil resident suspended for posting patient medical data on social media

Guilherme Lourenço Monteiro, a 26-year-old first-year anesthesiology resident at the Hospital de Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto in São Paulo, Brazil, has been removed from his duties after posting patient data on social media.

Monteiro shared a photograph of a screen displaying sensitive medical information, including a patient's weight, height, body mass index, and respiratory condition. The post, which included a comment deemed discriminatory by the hospital, reached between 100,000 and 130,000 views before being deleted.

In response, the hospital's Anesthesiology program leadership and the Medical Residency Commission suspended the professional. The institution has launched an internal ethical investigation, and the Regional Medical Council of São Paulo has opened its own inquiry. Monteiro's defense stated he is cooperating with investigations and will analyze the grounds for his removal.
