Medical resident suspension in Brazil

Overview

Guilherme Lourenço Monteiro, a first-year anesthesiology resident at the Hospital de Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto in São Paulo, Brazil, was suspended after posting sensitive patient data on social media.

On September 21, Monteiro shared an image of a medical record on X (formerly Twitter) that included a patient’s weight, height, Body Mass Index (BMI), and respiratory condition. The post, which was intended to illustrate clinical situations, reached between 100,000 and 130,000 views before being deleted. The hospital characterized the conduct as discriminatory and inadequate.

In response to the incident, the hospital’s Anesthesiology Residency Program supervisor and the Medical Residency Commission removed Monteiro from his duties. The Regional Medical Council of São Paulo (Cremesp) has launched an inquiry, and the hospital has initiated an internal ethical investigation. Legal experts noted the post likely violates the Medical Code of Ethics and the General Data Protection Law (LGPD). Monteiro’s defense stated he is cooperating with the investigations.
