Brazil: Rights and tax benefits for citizens living abroad
Brazilians living abroad may retain certain rights and benefits from their home country, including pensions and specific tax exemptions. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, approximately 4.9 million Brazilians reside outside of Brazil, many of whom continue to receive benefits paid by Brazilian sources.
Legal experts note that moving residence does not automatically terminate rights under Brazilian law. For instance, Law No. 7.713/1988 provides income tax exemptions for retirees and pensioners diagnosed with serious illnesses, such as cancer, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis. These exemptions are intended to alleviate the financial burden of medical treatments and can remain valid for those living abroad, provided they meet the legal requirements.
