Brazil rolls out hydrogen-powered trucks and bus

Chinese automaker GWM Hydrogen launched the commercial phase of its fuel‑cell truck in Brazil. The vehicle received its first fill of green hydrogen at the newly opened Centre for Low‑Carbon and Green Hydrogen Technologies at Senai Cimatec Park in Camaçari, Bahia. GWM projects sales of about R$20 million in 2026 and aims for R$200 million by 2027, targeting private firms and technology centres across Latin America. The truck carries a 105 kWh battery, stores up to 40 kg of hydrogen, delivers 400 kW (544 hp) and can travel roughly 500 km on a single fill.

Neoenergia, in partnership with Higer Bus, put Brazil’s first commercial green‑hydrogen bus into service on the Monumental Route in Brasília. The Azure A12H BR model, built by Higer Bus, seats 71 passengers, offers an autonomy of over 400 km and refuels in 10‑15 minutes from a Taguatinga‑based green‑hydrogen plant funded with more than R$30 million. The project integrates solar‑powered electrolysis, creating a fully renewable fuel cycle overseen by ANEEL.

Both initiatives mark a milestone for Brazil’s decarbonisation of heavy transport, demonstrating operational hydrogen vehicles and accompanying refuelling infrastructure.
