Brazil sees drop in household debt amid record rural credit delinquency
Brazil is seeing divergent trends in household and agricultural finances. According to the National Confederation of Trade (CNC), household indebtedness fell to 81.7% in September, the first decline this year. Delinquency also dropped to 29.6%, the lowest since March. However, the average time to pay overdue debts rose to 65.3 days, the highest since late 2024.
In the agricultural sector, the situation is more strained. Central Bank data shows that rural credit delinquency for individuals reached a record 9.69% in August. Additionally, rural credit disbursements fell by nearly 30% in the first quarter of the 2026/27 harvest cycle, dropping to R$ 80 billion from R$ 113.4 billion in the previous year. This decline is particularly sharp among large producers, who saw a 37.3% reduction in credit access.
To address financial vulnerabilities, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned Law No. 15.526/2026, which expands rural insurance protections and updates credit rules. The law aims to provide greater financial security for farmers against climate events and establishes stricter deadlines for insurance claim processing and payments.
