Brazil seafood industry faces growth and EU export blockades

The Brazilian seafood sector is navigating a complex international landscape marked by both expansion and regulatory challenges. The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture reports that Brazil has opened more than 19 new markets for fishery and aquaculture products since 2023. Consequently, the Brazilian Association of Fish Industries (Abipesca) projects external sales could reach approximately US$ 600 million this year.

To capitalize on this growth, the Seafood Show Latin America will take place from October 20 to 22 at Distrito Anhembi. The event features a 43% increase in exhibition space and includes initiatives like the Seafood Buyers Program and Exporta Mais Brasil to connect local suppliers with international buyers.

However, the industry faces significant hurdles due to a European Union embargo on Brazilian animal products, including seafood, beef, poultry, pork, honey, and eggs. Effective since September 3, the EU measure stems from concerns that Brazilian antimicrobial control mechanisms do not meet European standards. This blockade could impact up to US$ 2 billion in annual Brazilian exports. While the impact in the state of Rio Grande do Norte is expected to be limited due to its focus on fruit exports, officials note that redirected production could indirectly affect local producers.
