Brazil sees near‑doubling of electric bus registrations and surge in EV insurance in 2026

In the first half of 2026 Brazil registered 589 electric buses, a 92.5% increase over the same period in 2025 and a 363.8% rise compared with early 2024. São Paulo accounted for 99% of the national registrations, adding 500 new buses on 21 June and bringing its electrified fleet to 1,759 vehicles. The Southeast region supplied 79.5% of all electric‑bus registrations.

Bradesco Seguros reported a 67% jump in electric‑vehicle insurance policies in the first quarter of 2026 versus the same quarter a year earlier, with roughly two‑thirds of the new policies issued in São Paulo. The state also led electric‑car sales, representing 29.3% of national registrations. Light‑weight electric cars totaled 35,356 units in Q1 2026, up 146% from Q1 2025. The growth in electric mobility is linked to estimated reductions of up to 8.4% in fine‑particulate (PM2.5) concentrations at monitoring stations in São Paulo.
