Brazil sees rise in traffic violations as radar enforcement halted in Minas Gerais

In the city of Campinas, authorities recorded 78,900 traffic infractions up to July 2026, including 67,600 red‑light violations and 11,300 illegal stops or parking on pedestrian crossings. The municipal agency Emdec highlighted the risk to pedestrians and noted four fatal red‑light crashes in 2025.

Separately, a federal judge ordered the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) and the monitoring firm Velsis to explain, within 72 hours, the removal of 23 speed‑control devices – 17 electronic speed bumps and six radars – from the BR‑365 and BR‑050 highways in Minas Gerais. The Ministry of Public Prosecutor’s Office warned that the sudden loss of electronic monitoring has increased vehicle speeds and raised the likelihood of serious accidents.

Both incidents underscore growing concerns over traffic safety and the need for consistent enforcement across Brazilian road networks.
