Brazil's Traffic Code continues to define and penalise a range of road‑safety violations. In early July 2026 the code imposed medium‑level penalties for drivers who splash pedestrians while passing through water puddles (article 171) and gravíssima fines for overtaking other vehicles on the highway shoulder (article 202). Each breach carries a R$293.47 penalty and seven licence points. Seat‑belt and vehicle‑lighting fines also rose (9.07 % and 11.89 % respectively). Speeding remains the dominant breach, accounting for 55.83 % of all fines in the Federal District—almost double the national average—prompting expanded patrols, electronic radar monitoring and other enforcement actions. Further data released on 17 July 2026 reiterated the 8.18 % increase and highlighted local concerns, such as a 73‑year‑old resident’s fear of drivers ignoring pedestrian signals on Avenida Alagados. Authorities continue to use radar and increased patrols to curb the trend. On 25 July 2026, additional safety measures were announced. The Prof. Zeferino Vaz highway (SP‑332) in Campinas will close its km 112 return lane to trucks and buses from 27 July to 31 July, installing concrete barriers and reinforced signage; after reopening, only cars and motorcycles may use the lane. In Porto Alegre, three new red‑light detection devices were installed at high‑traffic intersections, bringing the city’s monitored points to eight.
