Brazil household debt reaches record 82% in July 2026

The Confederação Nacional do Comércio (CNC) reported that 82 % of Brazilian families were in debt in July 2026, according to its monthly Pesquisa de Endividamento e Inadimplência do Consumidor (Peic). The figure rose from 81.6 % in June 2026 and 78.5 % in July 2025, marking the sixth consecutive month at a historic high.

In the same month the share of families with overdue payments fell slightly to 29.8 % from 29.9 % in June. On average, households devote 29.5 % of their income to debt service, and 19 % of families allocate more than half of their monthly earnings to debt repayment.

Credit‑card balances remain the main driver, accounting for about 85 % of household debt. Low‑income households are most affected – 84.9 % of families earning up to three minimum wages have debt, versus 72 % of those earning ten or more minimum wages. The federal Desenrola 2.0 program, launched on 5 May 2026, aims to renegotiate outstanding obligations and may be contributing to the modest decline in delinquency.
