Brazil sees surge in consumer delinquency, over 15,000 new negatives in Santa Catarina

In June 2024 Brazil's consumer delinquency rose again, increasing by 0.28% after a brief lull. The latest Serasa report shows that 50.9% of adults now have a restriction on their CPF, with total open debts reaching R$ 579.5 billion and an average debt of R$ 6,920 per person.

The trend was observed in most states; only seven of the 27 federative units recorded a decline. In Santa Catarina the increase was 0.59% between May and June, adding more than 15,000 residents to the negative list. The state now has 2,673,670 people with a restriction, collectively owing over R$ 25 billion. Banks account for 46.9% of the debt, followed by basic services (21.3%) and other services (11.7%).

Serasa also extended the deadline for consumers to use discount coupons on its debt‑negotiation platform. Since May, more than 111,000 users have applied coupons, securing discounts exceeding R$ 974 million. Over 11 million Brazilians remain eligible for the benefits, which can add up to an extra R$ 500 discount per agreement.
