Brazil sees surge in first-time driver's license applications

The implementation of the CNH do Brasil program has led to a significant increase in individuals seeking their first driver's license across Brazilian states.

In Rio Grande do Norte, applications for a first license grew by 86% during the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. According to Detran/RN, 39,349 people initiated the process, up from 21,181 the previous year. This growth is attributed to simplified procedures and reduced costs, including the option to complete theoretical courses for free via a digital platform.

In Bahia, more than 207,000 people sought to start the process through Detran-BA over a six-month period between April and September. The program has reportedly reduced costs by up to 80% and accelerated the timeline; the average time to obtain a license in Bahia is now 86.8 days, down from the previous 6 to 12-month range.

The federal program utilizes digital tools to allow candidates to manage stages of the process through an app, offering options for autonomous study or traditional driving schools while maintaining mandatory theoretical and practical examinations.
