Brazil Senate approves financial aid for agriculture and transport

The Brazilian Senate has approved a legislative package (PL 5.649/2026) designed to provide financial support to the agriculture, transport, and aviation sectors. The bill now moves to presidential sanction.

A key component of the package is a R$ 12 per ton subsidy for sugarcane producers in the Northeast region. This measure aims to mitigate economic losses caused by extreme weather events and recent US tariffs on Brazilian exports. The government estimates the subsidy could reach R$ 270 million, potentially benefiting approximately 16,000 producers during the 2025/2026 harvest.

Additionally, the legislation authorizes up to R$ 14.5 billion in credit through BNDES for the renewal of transport fleets, including trucks, buses, and vans. This credit line is intended for autonomous truckers, micro-entrepreneurs (MEIs), and transport companies. The package also allows for up to R$ 10 billion to be allocated from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT) to finance innovative agricultural technologies and equipment.
