Brazil Senate proposes higher disability pensions for military police and firefighters

A bill (OPL 2.573/2026) introduced in the Brazilian Senate would require that military police and firefighters who retire due to disability receive pension benefits based on the rank immediately above the one they held at the time of service. The proposal, sponsored by Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PT‑AP), aims to extend to state security forces the same entitlement that members of the Armed Forces already enjoy, correcting the current rule that caps their pension at the rank they held when transferred to inactivity. Rodrigues argues the change is “necessary and fair” to honor the risks taken by these public servants.

If approved, the measure would align the remuneration of disabled state military personnel with that of their federal counterparts, potentially increasing pension payouts for a substantial number of police officers and firefighters across Brazil.
