Brazil Senate proposes law to protect supporters of Palestine from retaliation
A legislative initiative presented in the Federal Senate of Brazil seeks to guarantee the right of individuals and organizations to express political, cultural and humanitarian support for Palestine without facing retaliation. The draft, called the Law of the Right and Freedom of Support to Palestine, would prohibit discrimination against activists, journalists and diplomats who criticize Israel, provided their actions remain within Brazilian criminal and civil law.
The proposal aims to prevent the definition adopted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) from being used to label criticism of Israel as a hate‑crime. It references United Nations reports that more than 73,000 people, including about 30% children, have been killed in Gaza, framing the measure as a response to perceived censorship and lobbying by pro‑Israeli groups.
If approved, the law would also protect the right to advocate for Palestinian self‑determination and to boycott products from settlements deemed illegal under international law.
