Brazil Senate legislative initiatives

In mid‑July 2026 the Brazilian Senate approved amendments to a bill (PL 2.672/2025) that raise punishments for crimes committed against teachers, educators, doctors, nurses and similar professionals while they are performing their duties. The changes increase maximum imprisonment terms for bodily injury, honor‑related offenses and coercion, and double penalties for incitement and contempt.

A few weeks later, at the end of July, the Senate introduced a separate draft law – the Law of the Right and Freedom of Support to Palestine – aimed at protecting individuals and organisations that express political, cultural or humanitarian support for Palestine from retaliation. The proposal seeks to bar discrimination against activists, journalists and diplomats who criticize Israel, provided their conduct stays within Brazilian law, and would also safeguard advocacy for Palestinian self‑determination and boycotts of settlement products.

Both actions illustrate the Senate’s active legislative agenda in 2026, addressing distinct issues of public safety and freedom of expression.
