Brazil grain harvest projected at 366.6 million tons amid climate risks

Brazil is entering the 2026/27 grain harvest season with a projected total production of 366.6 million tons, a 1.4% increase over the previous cycle according to Conab. This growth is driven by an expansion in planted area to 85.3 million hectares, though average productivity is expected to see a slight decline of 0.9% due to climatic uncertainties.

Weather patterns present significant challenges across different regions. In the Center-West, particularly Mato Grosso and Goiás, low soil moisture and irregular rainfall pose risks of irregular germination and the potential need for replanting. Conversely, the South, specifically Rio Grande do Sul, faces excessive moisture that may delay soil preparation and planting windows. In Mato Grosso do Sul, the Antarctic Oscillation may bring atypical rainfall and cold fronts during the spring.

Specific crop outlooks vary: soybean production is estimated at 181.64 million tons, while corn is projected at 148 million tons. In Rio Grande do Sul, canola has seen a massive 530% increase in area over the last four years as farmers seek profitable alternatives to wheat. Additionally, Aprosoja MT reported that its water guardian program has mapped over 125,000 springs, highlighting efforts to balance agricultural production with environmental conservation.
