Rio de Janeiro legislature approves pink ankle bracelets for women aggressors

The Constitution and Justice Commission of the Rio de Janeiro State Assembly unanimously approved Project Law 7.549/26, which would require men convicted of domestic, gender‑based or sexual violence against women to wear electronic monitoring devices in a distinctive pink color. The measure aims to make it easier for police to identify monitored offenders, deter repeat offenses and enhance protection for victims and their support networks. The bill now moves to the full Assembly for possible amendments before a final vote.

A related study released by Ipea and the Brazilian Forum of Public Security found that two‑thirds of women who sought medical care for domestic violence in 2024 had previously experienced aggression. Of the 186,100 women treated, 100,800 (66.2%) reported prior incidents. The findings underscore the persistent nature of gender‑based violence in Brazil and have been cited alongside the new legislative proposal. The federal government’s National Pact against femicide, which includes a national offender registry and expanded protective measures, is also referenced in the context of these reforms.
